Today there are a number of Housing Estates in the Essex town of Waltham Abbey named Pasfield. However, back in the middle of the 18th century the ground on which the houses are now built was Pasfield Common on which race meetings were held. The earliest record of a meeting was on Thursday 16th April 1752, when Mr Johnson’s bay gelding beat his sole rival, a grey gelding owned by Mr Choak. The Match was for a purse of 240 Guineas and the winner carried 10 stone while Mr Choak’s gelding carried 8 st 7 lbs. There are no further records of racing taking place on the Common.
